Cutting stone straight with a hacksaw is hard.

A tile saw or band saw would probably work well and can be had for $100-$300.

Remember that the dust made by cutting/carving soapstone makes a very, very nice pigment when mixed with egg yolk, glair or gum -- a rather lovely sage green.

It's a much better use of it than having it as an eye irritant.

Ouch, I hope you are okay! As long as we are giving advice I suggest a breath mask as well. The last time I was cutting some wonderstone I was covered in so much dust I was coughing it up for days.
