Getting to know you!

Gakked from several others :)

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. (Some I know too well. You know who you are.) I read some of your journals, or we have something else in common and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you for your interest in my words.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...they listen in rapture to the love-music of she-turnips." I might feel compelled to mock your musical taste, but I'll certainly remember you.

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal and see what gems of knowledge appear.

I fly too much, and like the taste of unroasted almonds.

I'm not sure how much about me you really want to know. I am between surgeries on my knees, and doing lots and lots of Laurel-level paperwork to keep me busy while waiting. I live in Billings, Montana - not the frozen North, but close.

I was on a coed basketball team in my early teens.

One of the unhappy side-effects of hyperthyroidism is aggression. I find that I'm still hyperpissedoff for no good reason since the pharmacy overdose last month, and therefore haven't been saying much of anything lately. I don't need to inflict that on anyone.

Cue the worm song.

Hmm.... What's interesting about me? Not a lot, really. I need a lot of silence and down time. I like bird watching and gardening, although I'm not very good at either. My musical tastes run toward world music, especially Irish, Scottish and "Scandinavian."

Gosh, I wrote a good one on dernelof's, so what new can I come up with?

Erm -- Ah. I've been on two performance tours across the US, each 3 months long, each traveling by bus. One as an instrumentalist (in 1986), sleeping on gymnasium floors in schools throughout the US. One as a vocalist (in 1990), staying in different homes of church volunteers.

The funniest sleeping location: On the instrumental tour, I slept on the top of some lockers because it was just easier to have my own space there. It was a fairly modern school with these half-height locker blocks in labyrinths, and it was neater to be above everyone than tucked in these weird corners. And I was never worried about falling off them, either. :)

The strangest town visit: On the vocalist tour, we spent 4 days in Nausau, Bahamas. My host was an elder lady from the church, living in the "old part of town" which turned out to be a scary part of town, but we didn't know it. But we did take a picture of a street sign labeled "Dead Cat Alley" a block away.

Calligraphy cured my bad penmanship. When I was in 3rd grade, my penmanship was good enough that I was asked to help Greg Snegoff with his. By 6th grade, I was required to take remedial penmanship classes. In 8th grade, we had an "Open School Day" that was like Collegium in that we could take a full day of mini-seminars on cool stuff that we wouldn't otherwise have had available. I took Calligraphy and a number of other classes that I can't remember. W00t!

Being a librarian, I love books and the knowledge they give to me. Because of this, I have a huge collection of books. I have one of the largest collections of books dealing in the history of food, recipes and dining in the Known World. I also do this with all the other arts and crafts that I love, although those collections are smaller in volume. They don't call me a "stuff" Laurel for nothing.

I love potatoes, even if they are not period. I was originally a Music major and changed over to being an English major, and I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up

I had an epiphany, today.

I was looking at some photos of me in 12th grade, and I saw that I called myself "fat" back then. But I look at those photos, and look at myself today, and I want to bitchslap my younger self - She was so not "fat" - sure, at the high end of most retail clothing stores, but not quite Lane Bryant-sized (which I'm at the low/middle range, now). Sure, I was larger than my peers, but not by any significant margin!

What was I thinking?!

I read every book in the Torrance and Carson libraries on disabilities, and they still have the check-out card in the first book I ever checked out, and yes, my name is one of the only ones there.( I know, because I came back, and looked for that book, and saw the same card).

I've discovered that I rather like the taste of habanero peppers when they are drowned in enough fudge sauce. Prairie Thyme makes a lovely chocolate habanero fudge sauce that goes great on ice cream. Their Blackberry Jalapeno sauce is just odd, though.

I allow other people to make me feel small about myself from time to time.

I wanted to be a paleontologist when I was five or six. I thought digging up dinosaurs would be the world's coolest job.

I went to the same Jr. High, High School and College as Master Gareth.
I have been playing RPGs for 23 years.
One of my most prized possessions is a 1st Ed, copy of Men of Iron by Howard Pyle.

I love music and though I don't really play anything I have dreams of one day being really great and playing multiple instruments. On my wish to learn list are the guitar, mandolin, piano, trumpet, violin and cello.

[identity profile] kdmorin.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could sing. I used to be an okay singer and even participated in my jr. high school's show choir. And then something happened and the little talent I had went down the drain. If I could have any talent, it would be a great singing voice.

I was in gymnastics for about 10 years growing up, but was never any good at all. I just liked running around doing cartwheels, jumping on the trampoline and doing the vaults.

Awesome idea Aliskye.

Well let's see...you probably know I'm a Browncoat and also a Saltgunner as well. I know I saw you at Comic-Con (very briefly) but not sure if we've met at any other local Shindigs.

What else?

I used to teach horsebackriding lessons for a while. I'm an executive assistant now and working on at least one novel (okay maybe two) and learning about how to get them published. I love angsty/hurt fanfiction and get quite addicted to it sometimes (meaning that I find myself searching for and reading it all the time). I'm planning on going to England in May for Asylum2 (which will be my first trip to the UK ever). Thanks to Supernatural I'm sure, I now find myself loving classic cars and classic rock (though I always did love both of those things, it's just now I have more of an excuse to admit it).

hmmm......

I became obsessed with vampires at age 12 after reading Salem's Lot. I would comb the library shelves for every book I could possibly get my hands on that contained any information on vapires.

I now have a very extensive collection of vampire books, magazines and kitsch.

Personal stuff about me . . .
1. I'm French - born there and everything
2. I'm adopted - my mom did this insane deed when she was 58 years old and that's three years older than I am now. I cannot imagine raising a child (even one who is already 5) at 58!!
3. My biological grandfather was Ethiopian.
4. I have two children, Rob, my son, is 34 and will graduate law school in May'08; Rebecca, my daughter, is 32 and just had our first grand child - Griffin Connor.
5. I love country music, especially funky blue grass and I can play a wicked OBS - Oklahoma Blue Stomp!
6. I managed to read 58 books this year - far short of 100 but I also read an estimated 1,000 student essays so that should count for something.
7. I do not feel the need to complete things in tens:).
oh wait . . .
8. I have been teaching English and/or History in Junior High School now for 10 years - YIKES!
9. I have been married to my man for 17 years and that's officially now one year longer than I was married to the father of my children - thank gawd!

Your turn to share personal stuff I probably do not know.
Happy New Year!!
