The (long) Weekend Report
Sep. 11th, 2006 04:09 pmThis weekend was KWAR, the Known World Academy of the Rapier. I had volunteered a while ago to be in charge of the Ball and so I spent most of the weekend there. It was held at a hotel near the airport (about 5 minutes from my house with light traffic and 10 minutes away with heavy traffic.). Friday afternoon I helped watched the Hospitality room and helped a bit with registration. Saturday morning I went to Court and enjoyed the awards that were given. Raphael got a Duelist and Lot got an LoC. It was delightful to be present for both of those.
I helped watched the Hospitality suit in the morning and early afternoon and then went home for a little bit. (Partly to pick up my dance tapes which it turns out we needed.) I went back in the early event and ran into Baron Thomas and Baroness Angelina and I sat with them for a bit while they ordered dinner. I was too jittery over the Ball to sit for long.
And it was a good thing that I went to check on the room for the Ball because it was much smaller than what I remembered to be the original plan and had tables in the middle of what was to be the dance floor. Raphael helped me find Meala who said we could move things around. So we did. Then I found Giles and Giuseppe who were in the Hospitality suite. I got the boombox from Meala (but had to swap it out for the one that Grainne had brought). After that things were swell.
The wonderful Masters Guisuppe and Giles ran all the dancing and a number of people did dance. It was fabulous to see Giles command the room, just raising his voice slightly when things got a little loud. (Did I mention that the cash bar and desert table were in the same room?) And it was wonderful to see Guisuppe lead everyone through an exbuberant dance that he called Italian bumper cars. I only feared for my life once during that one. :) I think I miss dancing more often. Giles and Guisuppe took turns leading the dances with Giles handling most of the ECD dances and Guisuppe handling most of the rest. I am totally grateful to both of them for being there and doing such a fabulous job.
Late in the evening a couple from the West wanted to do Stingo and they ran us through it. I started to remember the dance part way through (though their version was a little different) and some of the old performance beats from L&U started to come back. Wow! It turns out that the couple dances with Merry Pranksters and that is where most of the original L&U dances came from. It was really fun. It makes me think I ought to be doing more dance now.
All in all everything worked out.
I went back on Sunday and again helped watch the Hospitality room (which had been blessed with the Coffee Bar of Splendoor on Saturday and Sunday.) Eilidh taught me how to do kumi himo (I hope that is spelled right) and that was really fun. I enjoyed the ease with which it handles more than one color of thread (because I never did figure out how to more than one color with my lucet). I'm looking forward to doing a lot more of that.
I finally left in the afternoon, did laundry, took a long walk and finally crashed after getting a CoH toon to 39. :)
Oh! And I almost finished my little linen coif. Mark 2 fits much better, though it might be a little too long. I need to fiddle with it a bit more. The third one should be perfect. :) Or something. :)
