One thing that you need to do if you are driving yourself to Yosemite is to have your car thoroughly washed before you go. Apparently, bears can smell even the slightest residue of food even in a locked car and have been know to tear cars apart to find the smell. Bears at Yosemite are a big problem. You will have to keep all your food properly locked up in one of their bear resistant lockers. And when you are eating, you have to keep vigilent and not leave any food out unwatched. Not on tables, not in tents, nowhere but in the lockers. And if you have an incident with a bear, not only is it your own fault, you will be fined $5000 for not following the rules. I was there about ten years ago and saw the results of someone who locked their icechest in their car and not in the locker. Their car was badly messed up, for which the park rangers were most unsympathetic, and they got that $5000 fine on top of it all. A very expensive mistake.

I believe that forewarned is forearmed. When I went, I had no idea about the bears. Fortunately, we had no problems, but it was shocking to see what happened to the campers a couple of spaces over. And even more shocking to see the unsympathetic attitude of the park rangers.

The park itself is gorgeous, if overcrowded with too many tourists. But the sights are quite breath taking.

I hope that you have a wonderful, bear-free time!
