Thanksgiving stuff

So, Thursday was the annual Thanksgiving in the park with tons of family and not terribly hot food cuz you know, it's like in the park. This year we used an Evite to set things up and that worked pretty well, but so many of the family are not clear on the concept. (Or maybe it's just me, more on that later). Some people come just for the family gathering and have no concept of how much work it is. My parents (mostly my mom) who aren't spring chickens any more bring the bulk of the stuff. Some people come and bring extra friends and only bring one pot luck dish to share. My sister (who did the Evite) had to follow up with people (like the cousin who was going to bring salsa as an appetizer, but no chips and then said the salsa was actually a condiment for the turkey. Boggle). Okay....anyway. I believe that as a family pot luck, everyone in the family should share the burden of putting the event on and helping to set up and clean up. On the other hand, my mom, who can't do it alone, is starting to believe it's her party and she doesn't mind the extra work. So, instead it falls alot on my sister and I. Sigh. I guess there is no real solution to this. I can not go next year and have my mom mad at me or I can go and resent the lazy relatives who don't help. (Like the other cousin who is vegetarian and complains that there aren't enough vegetarian dishes but *never* brings anything!) or try and just enjoy the event and not be anger when I'm trying to get stuff cleaned up and packed up after the event and they are still just sitting around.
Deep breath.
We went to see Harry Potter and the GoF afterwerds. Mixed feelings. It was pretty good but there is so much story missing. Of course it's a really long book. There are definitely things I would have done differently. Like the stuff in the maze. I would have done that much closer to the book. I would have liked to have seen the spider and the riddle. The rest was okay. The end in the graveyard was done well.
Yesterday was Little Thanksgiving, just my parents, sister, her family and me. That was really nice. I went over the morning and we set the table and had breakfast then went hiking in Griffith Park. That was really fun. We went up where they are still working on the Observatory (so parking was tight) and there were lots of people hiking (some in really inappropriate footwear). The trail from the Observatory to one of the look out points is I guess a couple of miles (lots of switchbacks) and very steep in spots. Boy am I outta shape! I have to work on that. My parents didn't get far, and then my sister and brother-in-law pooped out, and then I did. The kids (niece and nephew made it all the way to the top and I was about 5 minutes from the top when we went back to round up everyone else).
Got home, had appetizers (too much actually) and then a hot food Thanksgiving which was wonderful).
Then I went home as I really need some peace and quiet for myself. And that's what I'm doing today. I thought about going to Loscon, but there was only one thing on the program that looked interesting and I really want to just stay home be lazy and try and clean up the house a little. Maybe I'll do a little pewter casting.
Tomorrow is Company of Clothiers and I also need to get my act together for my half of the little class.
