I got up early but didn't get out the door for a walk until 8. I did 30 minutes around the neighborhood with BOC on the mp3. Then got back and spent the rest of the time updating my mission 101 list instead of actually working on anything. Ah....I guess record keeping is part of the process.

I need to 1) check on a friend's cat, 2) get to the bank, 3) do some minor grocery shopping (milk, oj, oatmeal, whatever else), 4) Ask Luighseach about places to buy paper for doing Asian style books (and how she cuts paper....I just don't have room for a large paper cutter), 5) game tonight, 6) buy some stuff for anniversary stuff, 7) work on shelves for storage shed and 8) clean house. Sheesh.

Okay....back in an hour with the first 3 completed hopefully.

Seems to me your ass IS in gear! Perhaps needing a bit of focus? You're moving right along on your Mission 101 stuff! You go girl! What scroll are you working on?

I think I need it to be 10 degrees cooler :) My condo doesn't usually get too hot, but maybe it's cuz I'm usually not here while the sun is shining straight down on the patio.

I'm working on Eileen Rahel de Pico's Pelican scroll. I'm really down to the fun parts of painting it. But I really want to get the shelves for the storage shed done. As soon as the sun moves off my patio. :)

Right now, I'm going to clean the house, and work on my squirrel badge heraldic submission.

By the way- you've mentions a name change a few times. What are you changing to? And is this a primay name change, or are you just registering an alternate persona? Please don't tell me I'm going to have to remember to call you by a different name!

*LAUGH* My poor brain just can't take this sorta thing!

It's going to be a primary name change but I'm keeping the old one as an alternate persona name.

It's gonna be (wait for it!!!!)

Aliskye Rosell

I could never get rid of the Aliskye part (even though it is shamelessly made up :) but the rest sounds more historical. (I'm pronouncing it Rose-l though I imagine in period it would be Russell.

Not much of a change really :)

Paper for Asian books

Aliskye are you asking about the pretty paper for the covers? At the moment, IKEA has some drop-dead bitchin' paper in the gift wrap section that works very well for Asian book covers once you laminate it with the rice paper backing. I don't have a big paper cutter either, but I do have a self-healing cutting mat on my fabric cutting table and I cut paper on that, using either a rotary knife or other cutter. Lacking that, you can measure off your pieces with a ruler and T-square, then make light pencil lines (light colors of colored pencil work spiff on dark paper) and cut carefully with scissors.

I meant to send you an email on this. :) I was thinking more of what kind of paper do you use for the text blocks? And how do you cut those? Can you cut more than one sheet with the rotary knife? What kind of glue do you use to glue the rice paper to the thinner cover sheets?

Thanks for your help, Luigseach!

The text block paper comes from Kelly Paper--I just find something in text weight that I like. I have a little paper cutter that works nicely for cutting sheets in quarters, but you could use an Xacto and a straight edge, just cut 3-4 sheets at a time.
The cover sheets and the rice paper are put together with wheat starch paste. You can buy wheat starch from the la-di-dah bookbinding supplies vendor at $5 per lb. or you can go to the Asian grocery store and look in the aisle with the tapioca (usually) and find it for $1 per lb. E-mail me for specific directions, 'K?
