I sent my mom a picture of the Roll of Arms that Lachlan and I did for Pentathlon, and you know what her sole reaction was:  She wanted to know if my arms were on it.  Not good job, not fabulous, not any kind of praise, just wanted to know if my arms are on it.  (Which is no of course cuz it's a roll of the sergeants of Lyondemere.)  Now I ask you, what kind of message does that send?  She's always telling me how wonderful all of my relatives are but when I show her stuff I've worked on, that I'm a little proud of, she has nothing good to say.  Hrumph.

I'm sure of that, but I also need to tell her that I'm tired of hearing how creative my cousins are. Hrumph.

And thanks :)

Maybe she's from that generation of people who were told never to "toot their own horns" and that goes for bragging too much about their kids too. So maybe your aunts and uncles are off bragging about your awesomeness and your cousins are like "I'm so sick of hearing about how creative Laurie is fer cryin' out loud!".

Then there's the parents who figure that if they ever tell you that you did something well, you'd either [A] turn into a total slacker or [B] develop such a case of the swelled head that you wouldn't be able to walk through normal-sized doors.

Best one my dad ever pulled on me: back in the day when SAT scores were Very Important to most universities, I got 787 out of a possible 800 points on the verbal/language arts section. This is the 99 point something-th percentile. When I showed the paper to my dad, his only comment was along the lines of "How'd you miss the other 13?" He wasn't joking.
