Yesterday was the first night of Hannukah so the Skinners (my sister and her husband and two children) are in town staying at my parents house. The seven of us got together yesterday to make latkes and exchange presents. My mom is sick with that dreadful cold that has been going around, but we still had to kick her out of the kitchen a couple of times. (The urge to keep working is really strong). So my sister, niece and I variously took charge of things. My dad and brother in law sat in the living room. My nephew got repeatedly drafted to do things, which he did almost with good humor. :)

My family is a great source of amusement to me. My mom likes to set a really nice table for events like this. Tablecloth, cloth napkins, the lead-cut crystal wine glasses she has acquired over the years and now the new plates my parents got on their trip to Russia. But she's let Jennifer (my niece) and I set the table now for several years. We've learned to do fancy napkin folding and tested out 3 different colors of tablecloths and napkins before settling on our scheme of dark blue, white and gold. The table was pretty, but not our best effort.

At Thanksgiving, we were setting the table for the second day of Thanksgiving (the small family gathering) when we found a straw turkey decoration in the linen closet. It was leaking something (it might have been filled with potpourri at some time) and looked like a crime victim. So, Jen and Michael and Terry all went into full CSI mode and examined the victim complete with digital photos. It was pretty hysterical (Okay....maybe you had to be there). We did the same thing last night with a cake that had been a gift to my parents and was all wrapped up on the table.

I got some cool presents including a little MP3 player that I need to learn to use. I got big points with the niece and nephew (both in college) by enjoying a CD of music that Michael had. (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day, other bands I don't recall :) It was good stuff and I'll see if I can get a copy from Mike.)

Today I'm puttering and cleaning and thinking I'll either go to a movie or play CoH all day or something. :) Tomorrow we are going to Disneyland.

I hope everyone enjoys happy holidays and a new year full of promise and accomplishment and joy.
